Ticking off a new Johor Bahru cafe off my list! People and Places Cafe was one that we have always wanted to visit ever since Jay Chou was spotted there. We finally made the trip over on our way to AEON Tebrau!
People & Places Cafe is situated within an industrial estate. When you first visit, you may just be wondering if you are at the right place! But within the stone-walls and quiet environment, you'll be surprised to find a garden oasis. The entrance of the cafe features a massive green wall where is a great photo spot. Enter through the entrance on the left into the rest of the garden, under the loft.
Nestled within lots of plants and high ceilings with full glass windows that allows in lots of natural sunlight, you'll seriously feel as though you have just left Johor Bahru.
On weekends and during peak hours, the cafe can get quite crowded! There are no advanced reservations allowed but there is quite a huge and open space where you could wait at and they also serve their peanut butter with some biscuits as well as some water. Otherwise, visit the interesting furniture store that is located within the same building!
The Melbourne-inspired cafe serves up a bunch of amazing food as well! The menu is not exactly extensive but has a sufficient variety. From your hearty breakfast staples like toasts, pancakes, and eggs, to interesting fusion foods like the Quesadilla Brekkie (RM 25).
We ordered the Quesadilla and it came on a beautiful plate with colourful red pomegrante. You'll be surprised by how the tom yum scrambled eggs in the tortillas, alongside chicken ham, sliced tomatoes, sriracha aioli, coriander and Belgium cheddar cheese come together so well! The top is also sprinkled with pesto oil, parmesan, and the pomegranate which gives the dish its beautiful aesthetic but also adds to the flavour. Especially the slightly tangy pomegranate that pops on every bite, provides a good contrast to the savoury cheese and tom yum eggs!
The portion of the quesadilla was very generous as well and we do recommend sharing them with other dishes. We also ordered a Wild Mushroom Risotto (RM 28). The aesthetic of it doesn't look like much but it was flavoured really well and we actually liked the texture of the Risotto. Even though it was an extremely creamy dish, alongside lots of shredded parmesan cheese, it wasn't overly satiating ("jelak"). We could taste the fresh mushrooms with a slight tinge of truffle oil infused within the dish. To top it off, the runny kampong egg was absolutely fresh and delicious.
For those looking to cut down on their calories could also try the keto-friendly Pan Fried Salmon with Kimchi Cauliflower Rice (RM 34.90) or Mess of Plants (RM 20.50). For each dish on the menu, you could also order add-on sides such as Smoked Salmon (RM 7) or a quarter of an Avocado (RM 6) at wallet-friendly prices!
When in a cafe, you absolutely cannot skip a cup of Joe! We ordered a Flat White (RM 10.50) that came in with some latte art as well as an Iced Americano (RM 12). The seasonal blend taste light, with a slight tinge of sourness, that helps to bring down all the greasy food.
The only downside of the cafe was its loud music. It does help to reduce hearing conversations of the people around you, but it also hinders conversations on your table. As such, People & Places Cafe isn't quite the cafe that makes you want to chill the entire day at. But for the half an hour or so just enjoying the food and coffee, it is still a worthy trip.
How to get to People & Places Cafe in Johor Bahru, Malaysia?
Grab your 4G Sim Card so that you can travel with data and GRAB everywhere! Since it is located within an industrial estate, you will only be able to drive or Grab there. Taxis are not the best though, since many of them may not know exactly where this place is!

Where to stay in Johor Bahru (JB), Malaysia?
During this trip, we stayed over at KSL Hotel and Resort Apartment, conveniently located above KSL shopping mall. That allowed us to catch some late night movies and still be able to head back up to rest. Other great hotels for a mini 2D1N stay in Johor Bahru include Amari Hotel Johor Bahru, located right across Komtar JBCC mall. We've written a short review here that you may want to read before booking your stay!
The other new-kid-on-the-block is Capri by Fraser Johor Bahru. We stayed at Capri during our recent trip so stay tuned for our review!
