Exploring Nice, the South of France: What to Eat, See, Do

Writer: MM

Nice captivates visitors with its stunning beaches, rich history, delicious food, and vibrant charm. On my recent journey to this jewel of the French Riviera, I found myself enchanted by the vibrant streets glowing in the Mediterranean sun, the mouthwatering scents drifting from local bistros, and the awe-inspiring panoramas from the hilltops. In this post, I will guide you on what to eat, see, do, and where to stay while exploring Nice.

Exploring Nice, the South of France: What to Eat, See, Do

How to get to Nice, France?

There are several ways to get to the French Riveria. You could either fly into Nice Airport by numerous airlines, or take the train from Paris or Lyon using the Eurail France Pass. I travelled from Frankfurt to Strasbourg and then took a flight on Volotea to Nice.

How to get around Nice, France?

You can easily get around Nice via its public transportation (bus, tram, train) as well as by foot. Exploring the city is best by foot as you could pop in and out of stores and also go to hidden places as far as possible. You can get the French Rivieria Pass for 24, 48, 72 hours that offers transport and attractions or the 1, 5, 7 day Lignes D'Azur Pass that is only for transportation, which you can use to travel to Monaco by the train.

But if you're a first-time traveller and are not savvy with the French city, you could opt for a hop-on-hop-off tour bus.

Where to Stay in Nice, France?

Choosing the right accommodation can make all the difference in your trip. Nice provides a variety of options for every budget, ensuring a comfortable stay. I initially had my eye on Le Meridien Nice, a resort hotel located on the waterfront but it was all sold out when I was about to do the booking, and opted to stay in the centre at the Hotel Mercure Nice Notre Dame instead. The property located right opposite the Nice Notre Dame and was located in the shopping street was a great choice!

Hotel Mercure Nice Notre Dame

For a luxurious experience, consider the Le Negresco Hotel. This iconic hotel features beautiful architecture and elegant rooms, some with stunning sea views. Alternatively, for budget-conscious travelers, charming hostels and boutique hotels like Villa Saint Exupéry beach hotel offer a welcoming atmosphere and excellent amenities.

I also recommend finding a place near the Promenade des Anglais. Many hotels provide easy access to the beach for those sunny days, allowing you to wake up to the soothing sound of the waves right outside your window.

No matter where you choose to stay, I encourage you to book accommodations in advance, especially during the busy summer months when Nice is a hot spot for tourists.

Where to Eat in Nice, France?

Dining in Nice is an adventure in itself, offering a wide range of flavors that reflect the city's unique culture. Here are a few must-try dishes that will tantalize your taste buds.

One dish that really stood out to me was Socca, a savory chickpea pancake beloved by locals. It is gluten-free and has a crispy texture with a soft interior. Traditionally, it is served with a sprinkle of black pepper and often enjoyed right from bustling street stalls. A quick stop at a local market revealed that many vendors sell this treat for around 3 to 5 euros, making it a budget-friendly delight. Trust me, you haven't truly experienced Nice until you've indulged in this classic snack. I'd recommend Lou Pilha Leva in the Old Town.

Another essential dish is the Salade Niçoise. This is not just any salad. It includes vibrant fresh vegetables, hard-boiled eggs, and tuna, all drizzled with high-quality olive oil sourced from the region. After a long day of exploring, this light meal is refreshing and nutritious. You can enjoy a generous portion at many of the local cafes for about 10 to 15 euros.

For those with a sweet tooth, the Tarte de Fenouil is a must-try. This unique fennel tart embodies the region's flavors beautifully. I discovered a lovely little bakery in the Old Town where I savoured a slice for around 4 euros while watching locals bid each other good day.

What to See in Nice, France?

The historical and cultural richness of Nice provides countless opportunities for exploration.

Stroll along Promenande des Anglais

A stroll along the Promenade des Anglais, an iconic waterfront walkway, is a must. Spanning about 7 kilometers, it is lined with palm trees and scenic benches. I enjoyed taking in the vivid blue sea while basking in the warm sun, soaking in the stunning views along the way.

Visit the Old Town of Nice

Don't skip a visit to Old Town (Vieux Nice). The narrow streets are packed with charming shops and delightful eateries. I spent an invigorating afternoon wandering the streets, popped into the Church of St Rita, and tried all kinds of food here. Night in the Old Town is also really nice, as the skies turned dark and the streets lit up with orange lights.

Head to the Marc Chagall National Museum

Art enthusiasts should visit the Marc Chagall National Museum. Here, you’ll find a remarkable collection of Chagall’s artwork that showcases his vibrant style. I spent a good couple of hours admiring the pieces, surrounded by their vivid colors and emotional depth.

Hike up Castle Hill

If you are looking for an adventure, head up to Castle Hill (Colline du Château). The hike may be a bit challenging, but the panoramic views of Nice and the Mediterranean are worth the effort. From the top, I was rewarded with breathtaking scenery that showcased the city's beauty, truly one of my favourite experiences during my visit.

Discover nightlife in Nice

If nightlife is your scene, Nice boasts a lively atmosphere after dark. I discovered a range of bars and clubs that came alive at sunset, offering live music and innovative cocktails. Dancing under the stars with the Mediterranean breeze was a memorable highlight of my trip.

Lounge on Plage Beau Rivage

For beach lovers, lounging on the pebbles of Plage Beau Rivage is an ideal way to spend a relaxing day. The clear waters invite you for a refreshing swim, and several beach clubs offer comfortable spots to relax and enjoy drinks. I spent many sun-soaked afternoons there, reveling in the warm sun and cool breeze.

Go on Day Trips!

As amazing as Nice is, it is also the perfect base for your French Riveria tour as it is situated in a perfect location for nearby cities like Monacco, Eze, Cannes, and Menton. And this is exactly what we did.

You could either do-it-yourself, or join a bus tour.

Final Thoughts

Nice, with its stunning landscapes, delicious cuisine, and vibrant culture, quickly became one of my favorite destinations. Whether you are enjoying local delicacies, wandering through historic streets, lounging on the beach, or taking in breathtaking views, there is something for everyone in this beautiful city.

As you plan your trip, remember to embrace the local pace of life. Slow down, enjoy the scenery, and indulge in the exquisite flavors the South of France offers. I hope this guide serves as a helpful resource while you explore Nice and create unforgettable memories. Safe travels!
