scoring the best travel insurance deals

Scored an amazing air ticket or hotel deal for your next holiday? Now what? Well... other than deciding what to do, where to go, and what to shortlist to eat for your next trip, securing the right travel insurance is crucial for any trip!

It provides you peace of mind and financial protection in case of unexpected events. But with so many options available in the market, finding the best deals on travel insurance can be a daunting task. In this guide, I'll share some of my tips and strategies to help you navigate the world of travel insurance and score the best deals for your next adventure from Singapore!

Why should I buy travel insurance for my next holiday?

Travel insurance serves as a crucial safety net for travellers, offering protection and peace of mind in the face of unforeseen circumstances.

One of the primary reasons travel insurance is important is its ability to provide financial coverage for medical emergencies while traveling. Whether it's a sudden illness, injury, or accident, medical expenses incurred abroad can be exorbitant, especially in countries with high healthcare costs or limited access to medical facilities. Travel insurance ensures that travellers like you and me have access to necessary medical treatment without having to worry about the financial burden, allowing us to focus on our health and recovery. Additionally, travel insurance often includes benefits such as emergency assistance services, which can be invaluable in navigating unfamiliar situations or obtaining assistance in a foreign country. These services may include medical evacuation, emergency medical assistance, legal assistance, and translation services, ensuring that you'll have access to all the relevant support and resources.

In the event of trip cancellation, you may be reimbursed for non-refundable expenses such as flights, accommodations, and prepaid activities, mitigating financial loss. Similarly, if your trip is interrupted due to an emergency, travel insurance can cover additional expenses incurred for accommodations, transportation, and alternative travel arrangements to return home.

Another important aspect of travel insurance is its coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged belongings during travel. Whether it's luggage, personal belongings, or valuable items such as electronics or jewelry, travel insurance provides reimbursement for the cost of replacing or repairing these items, offering peace of mind and financial protection against loss or theft.

Overall, travel insurance is important because it provides comprehensive coverage for a wide range of unforeseen events and emergencies that may occur during travel. By investing in travel insurance, you can travel with confidence, knowing that you are protected against potential risks and uncertainties, allowing you to focus on enjoying your trip to the fullest.

Tip 1: Start your travel insurance hunt early

Buying travel insurance early is crucial for several reasons, offering peace of mind and financial protection from the moment you book your trip. First and foremost, purchasing travel insurance early ensures that you are covered for unexpected events that may arise before your departure. These events could include sudden illness or injury, family emergencies, or unforeseen travel disruptions that may necessitate canceling or postponing your trip.

Plus, now with some of the travel policies allowing for an additional cancel anyway cover. This enables you to take advantage of cheap flights and purchase them with the flexibility and option of cancelling if things don't go to plan. (Note that this doesn't mean you get back the full sum, please read the terms and conditions)

Additionally, buying travel insurance early allows you to take advantage of certain benefits and coverage options that may not be available if you wait until closer to your departure date. For example, some policies offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions or include additional benefits such as trip cancellation for any reason. By purchasing your policy early, you can access these valuable features and tailor your coverage to meet your specific needs.

Another important reason to buy travel insurance early is to ensure coverage for pre-trip expenses, such as non-refundable deposits and payments for flights, accommodations, and activities. If you wait until the last minute to purchase insurance, you may not be covered for these expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason. By buying insurance early, you can protect your investment and avoid financial loss in the event of trip cancellation or interruption.

Furthermore, purchasing travel insurance early provides you with ample time to review your policy documents, understand your coverage, and make any necessary adjustments or additions before your trip. This allows you to clarify any questions or concerns with your insurer and ensure that you have the appropriate level of coverage for your travel plans.

Tip 2: Use travel insurance comparison articles to help you choose the right travel insurance

Travel insurance comparison guides look at all the available travel insurance and pit them against each other! All you have to do is to put in your travel dates and country. The travel insurance I personally use is the FWD Travel Insurance. FWD offers some of the most competitive rates in the market for SEA countries, and I typically go for the mid-tier version. They also have promotions from time to time and as of the time of writing (June 2024), they have a free apple air tag and smart delay promotion.

Tip 3: Consider Annual Multi-Trip Policies

If you're a frequent traveller, then consider opting for an annual multi-trip policy instead of purchasing single-trip coverage every single time. This means that you've cleared 1 travel logistics out of the way every time you book the next flight out. Furthermore, annual policies typically offer better value for money, covering multiple trips throughout the year for a single premium, granting you significant savings!

Tip 4: Bundle with other insurance policies, or credit cards!

Another way to score the best deals on travel insurance is to bundle your coverage with other insurance policies, such as home or car insurance. Many insurers offer discounts for customers who purchase multiple policies, so be sure to inquire about bundling options when shopping for travel insurance in Singapore.

There are also credit cards that grant you free travel insurance when you purchase your air tickets and/or hotel stays with that card. Some of these are the following:

  • HSBC TravelOne Credit Card - I personally have this card and I use this whenever I'm overseas as it clocks in 2.4 miles per dollar. On top of the free travel insurance, I can also enjoy 4 airport lounge visits per year.

  • DBS Altitude - This is actually my first-ever credit card. I like how miles don't expire and it was the card that started me on the miles game (even though it doesn't give me much miles per dollar, I've learnt it the hard way years back).

  • Citi Premier Miles Card

  • UOB PRVI Miles Card

*Please note that you should always do your own research when applying for credit cards

Tip 5: Look for Promotions and Discounts

Promotions and discounts offered by insurance companies, travel agencies, banks and credit card providers abound at most times of the year. These promotions may include discounted premiums, cashback offers, complimentary coverage upgrades, or even offering free gifts like airtags, etc, helping you save money on your travel insurance policy.

Be sure to read the terms and conditions carefully, and compare the overall value of the promotion before making a decision.

Tip 6: Read the fine prints and consider your coverage carefully

Do you really need the most premium offering? Read through the coverage terms and opt for policies that provide essential protection without any unnecessary extras. While comprehensive policies offer extensive coverage, they may come with higher premiums. By choosing a policy with essential coverage for medical expenses, trip cancellations, and luggage loss, you can save money on premiums while still enjoying a peace of mind during your travels.

In conclusion

All in all, scoring the best deals on travel insurance in Singapore requires careful research, comparison, and strategic planning. By starting your search early, comparing quotes, considering annual policies, bundling with other insurance policies, and looking for promotions and discounts, you can find the most competitive rates and secure the right coverage for your next adventure. With these insider tips, you'll be well-equipped to navigate the world of travel insurance and travel with confidence wherever your journey takes you.
